Ask
Have a natural-language conversation and get answers written from your documents.
Ask writes an answer from your documents and cites the files it relies on. It is the other half of querying: Search hands you the raw passages, here a model reads them for you and writes the answer.
Before your first question
Above the conversation there are three selectors, filled in in this order, because each one narrows the next:
- Provider credential. Only credentials from providers that can generate text show up. A credential that only serves indexing cannot answer here.
- Generation model. Only models from the provider of the credential you picked. If you change the credential, the model is cleared: it belonged to the previous provider.
- Knowledge base. Which documents you want to ask about.
The platform remembers this configuration between sessions, separately for each organisation. If any of the three stops existing — you delete a credential, say — that field goes back to empty rather than failing when you ask.
Generating answers consumes tokens from your account with the provider, and the platform imposes no spending cap. Long conversations consume more, because every question also sends what has been said so far.
Asking without a knowledge base
The knowledge base selector has an option called "No knowledge base (general knowledge)".
In that mode none of your documents are consulted: the answer comes from the model's general knowledge, the same it would have on any topic. There are no sources to cite because nothing of yours was read.
While that mode is on you will see a permanent notice above the conversation, and every answer generated that way is marked. It is worth keeping in mind: it is easy to take something for internal documentation when it is really the model's general knowledge.
The conversation is not saved
The thread lives only in your browser while the screen is open:
- It is lost when you reload the page.
- It is cleared when you switch active organisation, so the context of two organisations never mixes in the same conversation.
- It is not recorded on the platform and cannot be recovered later.
If an answer matters to you, copy it with the button underneath.
Writing and sending
Enter sends the question and Shift + Enter inserts a line break. The box grows with the text
and accepts up to 10,000 characters per question.
If the box is disabled, the text inside it tells you what is missing: almost always picking the credential or the model.
While the answer is generated you will see a progress indicator. The answer arrives all at once, it is not typed out gradually.
Sources
Under every grounded answer you get the documents it relies on, grouped by file and showing how many passages each one contributed.
The last answer shows its sources expanded and earlier ones collapse on their own, so the thread does not fill up. If you open some by hand, they stay as you left them.
Each source offers the original download when that document has one stored; otherwise it says "Original not available". The download always uses the knowledge base the answer was generated with, even if you have since switched bases in the selector.
When nothing is found in your documents
If none of your documents cover the topic, the answer says so explicitly and is marked as nothing found about it.
This is not an error: it is the correct answer when the question falls outside what your knowledge base holds. It beats having the model improvise something that sounds right but is in none of your documents.
If you believe the information is there, check that you are asking against the right base and that the document is in the Ready state.
Copy and regenerate
Under each answer there are two actions: copy and regenerate.
Regenerate is only offered on the last answer: it discards that answer and asks the same question again. It helps when an answer came out short or you want to try another model.
If a question fails, your question stays in the thread, so you can retry with that same action without typing it again.
Two errors not to confuse
| What you see | Whose it is | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Too many requests | This application's: 20 per minute | Wait a few seconds |
| Provider error | Your account's with the provider | Check key, credit and limits |
Telling them apart matters: confusing one for the other sends you looking for the problem in the wrong place. The first clears up by waiting; the second, by going into your provider account.
