Provider credentials
The keys the platform uses to call your AI model provider.
Everything the platform does with AI models — indexing documents, searching by meaning and writing answers — is paid for with your account at the provider. This is where you register the keys those calls are made with.
Without at least one credential you cannot create any knowledge base.
Adding a credential
You need two things: pick the provider and paste the key from its dashboard. The description is for you, to tell them apart in the selectors ("Production account", "Testing").
The key is only visible at the moment you save it. From then on the platform never returns it: not in the list, not when editing, not through support. If you lose it, generate a new one in your provider's dashboard and register another credential here.
What each one is used for
The same credential can serve two different purposes, depending on what the provider can do:
- Indexing and searching — this is the credential you pick when creating a knowledge base, and the one that pays for every document you upload and every search you run.
- Writing answers — the one you pick in Ask. Only credentials from providers that can generate text show up there: one that only serves indexing is not offered.
So a credential may appear in one selector and not the other. That is not a bug: that provider simply does not cover that use.
Having several
Registering more than one is worth it when you want to separate spending (a team, a project or a test environment with its own bill) or when you use different providers for indexing and for answering.
Deleting a credential
If any knowledge base is using the credential, the dialog tells you before anything happens: it lists the affected bases and does not offer the delete button. You first have to change their credential — from each base's header — or delete those bases.
This is deliberate: a knowledge base without a valid credential could not index anything new nor answer queries.
When no base uses it, it deletes without fuss. Deleting it here does not revoke the key at the provider: if you want it truly invalidated, do that in their dashboard too.
